Founded in Turin, Italy in 1917, Persol, derived from the Italian "Per il sole" ("For the sun"), has been perfecting its iconic eyewear for more than 100 years. The original 649, still in production today and best-known for its recognizable 3-notched bridge, was designed to protect the local drivers of trolley 649 from dust and glare. In 1968 all eyes turned to film legend Steve McQueen who rocked a folding version of the 649 (the 714) on-set while filming The Thomas Crown Affair—vaulting Persol to the realm of global fashion legend. Over 100 years later, each pair is still handmade in Italy.
