THE PROCESS: The Future Mapping Co.'s printers are specialised craftsmen with years of experience in lithographic printing. They have an exceptional attention to detail and know the print process – and machines – inside out.
The Future Mapping Co.'s bespoke inks are hand-mixed by specialists, meaning they achieve exact colours on the Pantone chart unlike digital printing methods that use CMYK as their base. It’s a honed skill, which allows them to create our trademark metallic and luminescent colours, adding vibrancy and texture to our maps.
They lithographically print maps: each colour has its own unique plate, which is bent over its individual roller in order to apply it to the paper.
Each coloured-ink has its own inkwell – they’re checked against each other for strength, vibrancy and balance. Once the colour levels are correct, we calibrate the rollers so they’re all in alignment – even a millimetre difference will create a misprint, and paper wet with ink is inclined to stretch. A combination of time and patience ensures the machinery is set up correctly.
Once cut to size, Future Mapping Co adds their trademark gloss varnish finish through a separate screen print, before passing the prints through a UV radiation dryer. When hung on a wall, the varnish reflects light, adding an extra dimension of contrast and relief between landmasses and the oceans.
