**Sam Larson’s pen captures the heritage of the Yellowstone**

Sam Larson resides in Portland, Oregon, and wields sharpies, pencils, markers, pens, and crayons to imbue every canvas he touches with an electric charge of northwest character. In his [Huckberry Artist Spotlight](https://huckberry.com/special-projects/artists/sam-larson-x-huckberry) Sam talks about his love of the Wild West, the role of art in the world and his love of creating illustrations with just a black pen and a piece of white paper. Huckberry commissioned a series of illustrations from Sam for shirts to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial this year, and man did he deliver. The shirts look amazing and, made ultra-soft tri-blend fabric, they feel great too.

Sam Larson on Art: “For me, it's always been about the process and less about the tools. Specifically I think people get so held up with what medium to use because they feel like they have to use a certain expensive pen or some special paper, when what they need to realize is that the goal of creating art really has little to do with the utensil itself. Personally, I mostly work with just a black pen and white paper. That's it. Granted, I'm always happy experimenting with things — cardboard boxes, crayons, paints or markers, which are great, but ultimately, I try to keep to the basics because they’re cheap and super easy to carry around.” - Sam Larson
